The Northeast's highest peak will captivate you with its remarkable views of the Presidential Range, the White Mountain National Forest and beyond. The route, views and magic of this mountain sanctuary have remained largely unchanged since travelers began winding their way up Mt Washington in 1861. This road to the sky was an unprecedented engineering achievement and remains the first man-made attraction in the United States! The average grade of 12% winds upward 8 miles to the top of New England on mostly paved road. The Mt Washington Auto Road plays host to the Annual Mt Washington Auto Road FootRace, GMC Truck-MW Hill Climb, America's oldest motorsport hillclimb, and the Mt Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hill Climb. The Mt Washington Cog Railway was an engineering marvel in 1869, a new technology of toothed cog gears and rack rails and tilted boilers. Long before there were automobiles, or electric lights or telephones, the powerful steam trains climbed the highest peak in the Northeast. This was the world's first mountain climbing cog railway, and today it's the only one still powered entirely by steam. Some days the view from the summit of Mt Washington spans four states, limited only by the curvature of the earth. Other days you climb above the clouds. This exciting 3-hour trip is an unforgetable journey. Bring a camera and an extra sweater. Advance ticket purchase is recommended.
