Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States, rises to
1,917m (6,288 ft) in the Presidential Range of the WHITE MOUNTAINS in northern
New Hampshire. The mountain is a popular outdoor sports area. Numerous hiking
trails, a cog railway built in 1869, and a highway lead to the top.
Known for its severe climate, the mountain is the site of a weather station that has recorded many of the strongest winds in the United States.
